Doom Wads/Mods #347:Knee-Deep In Zdoom
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom/Ports/megawads/kdizd_12 ...And now, It's time to dive into the ugly side of Doom, The controversy. Unless you were living under a rock or in a monastery you obviously might have known about how Doom was highly controversial for the gore and blood that, at the time was seen as realistic and it's satanic themes also generated panic, It also at one point was blamed for the Columbine Massacre but was largely discredited later, But despite this, The loudest outrage comes from the doom community itself, This was demonstrated well with TNT Evilution but in 2007, A 10 level pk3 file by Tormentor667 would ignite a firestorm and become not only one of the cacoawards most controversial winners but become one of the most hated projects of the last 20 years.
Released on June 13th 2007, Knee-Deep In Zdoom is a 10 level pk3 file that recreates Ultimate Doom's first episode with detail made specifically for the Zdoom sourceport such as mirrors, camera monitors, glass windows that are transparent and much more, New enemies, a quake II like feeling and various new tricks in the engine that couldn't have been done in 1993, This video is NOT a hate post nor is a fanboy post, I aim to show what I don't like about KDIZD and what I do like about it, Because, From the author of The Ultimate Torment And Torture with a huge A-list of mappers such as Vader, Enjay, WildWeasel, Scuba Steve, Phobus, and The Ultimate DooMer, This file feels like a effort that was too big to handle.
Taking a step back, The mapping of Knee-Deep In Zdoom is YES, Impressive, It actually looks like a techbase that we enter, The detail in the maps does strike as good, though there has been complaints that the hyper-detailed rooms make progress very hard and that's a thing I agree on there, Sometimes I couldn't see a switch I needed, There were also times where the darkness hide ammo I needed, New enemies are...eh ok? But they were much too overpowered and some were impossible to dodge their attacks, The biggest flaw? The boss map tries too hard to make a impressive bruiser brothers fight with a custom "Bruiser Demon" but whiffs badly, I guess there's fans out there of this wad but I'm not one, I liked it for what it tried but playing it was not that enjoyable.
