Doom Wads/Mods #346:Requiem
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/megawads/requiem Ah.. 1997, It has been 1 year since Duke 3d was released and with the 1990's in the late time, the never-ending search for a new FPS game led to the rise of Quake and various other shooters I play still, Doom was still going strong and one of my personal favorite wads released this year on Independence Day 1997, It was honored as the first wad out of 10 for the 1997 year in the top 100 doom wads of all, I'm talking about.. Requiem.
Made by the same authors and mappers from both Memento Mori and Memento Mori II, Famous people including those from Doom's first ever wad making group The Innocent Crew, Team TNT's Tom Mustaine, and Chris Thornton, It was envisioned as "The last great Doom megawad" using it's name as a "Requiem Masses", I find it interesting that Requiem is a beta build since there was so much chaos during it's developement but regardless this "final build" still has a kick to it.
I did not use the music file which has tracks by Jeremy Doyle, Mark Klem and David Shaw because, like Memento Mori and it's sequel, I find the original Doom 2 soundtrack to be a better fit, Requiem's mapping is just incredible, This happened 1 year after Memento Mori II and the style of each map gives it a distinctive edge over other '97 wads, Requiem's ammo count is just right and the enemy placement feels downright doom-esqe like in The Crusher and The Inmost Dens from Doom II, It also uses fake 3d bridges, something future megawads would try hard to replicate but would not be able to do until sourceports took over.
Requiem is a special wad to me, It was the 9th wad I ever downloaded and the 2nd I beat despite being very young, Everything about the wad despite it's strange bugs in the last episode are fine, I believe Requiem is one of the greats just like Scythe II and Alien Vendetta, And with it's remixed soundtrack it gave me a new reason to fire it up vanilla style in Doom 95 launcher.
