GBA Talk #6:Pac-Man Collection
1What exactly can be said about Pac-Man? A yellow being who eats dots and is chased by Blinky, Clyde, Inky, and Pinky, the four ghosts who all go back to the original arcade video game when he was known as Puck-Man, How time flies as Pac-Man hasn't really evolved throughout the years aside from spin-off games with Pac-Man World and other games, He's even been in a Party game that I had on Gamecube, and with that in Mind, This is another of the first GBA games I had when I got my original Purple gameboy advance, A collection of 4 Pac-Man games all bundled into one cart.
Pac-Man Collection was developed by Mass Media and published by Namco on July 12th 2001, It contains the original 1980 Arcade game of Pac-Man, Pac-Attack which was on the Sega Genesis/Super Nintendo, Pac-Mania which goes back to a 1987 aracade system and Pac-Man Arrangement which is from Namco Classic Collection Vol. 2, and for a game collection that was at the time about 40 dollars, It feels like a solid package despite a few issues.
Pac-Attack is basically Tetris but with Ghosts that Pac-Man needs to eat while forming block lines, If you run out of Pac-Mans you lose a life and have to restart, I've not ever played the original but it seems fine, The music though was a bit droning. Pac-Mania is basically Pac-Man's 1980 arcade version but if the view was in 3D which is pretty unique, and we can jump over the ghosts, Pac-Man 1980 arcade game's controls are pretty dreadful and it felt broken despite being a solid port while Pac-Man Arrangement adds new mechanics such as dash pads and a new ghost, Kinky who can be eaten like a pac-dot to hunt the ghosts.
There's not really much of a control issue in the other games but the lack of a ability to keep scores, Which are wiped by the game cart when you turn it off was a bit upsetting because Pac-Man's about getting a high score and.. what were you thinking Mass Media? But despite that, I'd call this collection a perfect way to pass the time on the go.
