Doom Wads/Mods The Rejected #18:City Of Doom
https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/a-c/cod1-11 Walking in the city, let the sounds and sights envelope you. City levels are nothing new to Doom as Doom II had the first ever city levels in a PC game, which, today are often seen as somewhat poor in design, but back then, it was something different. Players too, have been making city level pwads for many years, and this is one of two I'll be going over to showcase their differences and how they are in my eyes vs Doom II's Earth episode levels.
Authored by Nowotony (Paul Maurone) and released on September 13th 2000, City of Doom is a 11 Level unfinished beta of what was to be 32 maps but remains uncompleted. There's not really a story to be found, and Paul's text file on the Doomworld I.D. Archive only mentions "I tried to put the player in the city as best as posible. E-mail about your opinions. All info will be welcome!" which, feels suspect at best as City of Doom has good and bad parts.
Firstly, City of Doom's music is very questionable at best, with a track by Emerson Lake & Palmer being Map01's music and it strikes me that none of the tracks decided on, which are midi versions of licensed music fit in a cityscape setting that Paul was going for. Mapping is alright with some doom cute details but the last two maps look very rough in comparison to other city levels.
Ammo's a serious concern at times due to unusual placement and progress is where City of Doom can hit a wall as Paul's placement of keys and switches are just downright odd at times or make no sense at all, This beta is fully playable and it is a nice twist on city levels for Doom but its actual experience is lacking after 1 playthrough.
[[Now, for a season 8 reject, I originally began Season 8 thinking of this as the finale episode. Yet I put the file away until now as nothing stood out to me and this was prior to a restructuring of this series to focus on older wads and lesser known releases]]
