While plans for the draw down of operations in Germany remain unclear, it is an uncertain time for everyone, not just the forces, but the towns and cities as well. One of the most recent garrisons to close was Osnabruck in 2009. There were concerns it would affect the local economy, but now the handover is being hailed as a success story.
