Dread Templar first playthrough, part 5
We've got a final episode to finish, and then some.
The conclusion of the final episode takes us even further in the direction that it had already begun moving in, and culminates in a final boss with possibly the clearest audio cues in the entire game, mercifully. That doesn't mean it doesn't still have a nasty trick or two up its sleeves.
Looking at the level select menu after finishing the game, it listed what I have to presume was a secret level that I missed, so we take a look at that, and then move on to Guardian Mode, effectively the game's version of horde mode. It starts off fairly easy, but certainly becomes punishing after a while, and survival resources become extremely expensive after a few uses. The menu seems to suggest there are multiple maps for Guardian Mode, but I'm not sure whether others have unlock conditions, or if there's really only one...
If you've been following this playthrough and reading my comments, you already know I have had several bones to pick with this FPS. It's not nearly the worst offender in terms of games that bill themselves as "retro" while learning absolutely nothing from actual retro games from last century, but it does have some pretty glaring flaws, and doesn't feel nearly as satisfying as it could with some better design choices. If you're really itching for a modern boomer shooter to burn a dozen or so hours on and have exhausted other options, maybe give this a look, but otherwise, there are far stronger titles either out or in the works (and plenty of community content for 90's classics like Doom and Quake).
