After making decent progress in the last segment but not coming across any new statues yet, I figured I had my work cut out for me before reaching the endgame.

It turns out the endgame came sooner than I anticipated, after one more dungeon with one final new mechanic, and a surprisingly swift resolution to the Jackal situation.

Breaking from the precedent set in Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia doesn't wait until after you acquire the sixth macguffin before launching into the endgame, instead opting to do that en route to the final statue.

Unfortunately, one precedent it does uphold from previous Quintet games is the final boss with annoyingly narrow opportunities to inflict damage. And once again, I completely blanked on the game's blocking mechanic, which turns out to be fairly important in the end...

Overall, IoG certainly comes off as more ambitious than Soul Blazer, and is successful in some regards: more meaningful NPCs, more plot-heavy (even if parts of it are utter shitposts), more varied areas and player abilities. Unfortunately it still suffers a couple of conveyance issues and a wonky translation pretty much on par with Soul Blazer.

Next up we'll have Terranigma, which from what little I remember playing 2 decades ago, is likely to be the crowning achievement of the trilogy. Too bad it was never physically released in North America...
