DuckTales (NES) Playthrough Part 1 - Translyvania and the Himalayas
[Difficult Mode]
A true pinnacle of success when Capcom joined with Disney to produce a pretty vast library of video games back around the 1990's. This is truly a game which can stand against the test of time, the impression it leaves on us is undeniable.
I'll admit that when I first heard of the game, I didn't know what to make of it since I was still pretty young and only watched the show. The TV show itself becoming a platformer wasn't out of plausibility, but it got me thinking how they could've made it differently than the others. Turning Scrooge McDuck's own cane into the main game mechanic was something I never expected; pogo jumping and golf swinging with it. Really helps that Mega Man's creator, Kenji Inafune was involved in the development. Although Scrooge's cane hasn't exactly been a major defining instrument in the TV series (except maybe the Masked Mallard episode) like it is in the game, but recently in the DuckTales and Darkwing crossover comic, Scrooge is briefly seen pogoing on his cane.
The graphics are top-notch, reflect the very respective characters from the show; although why Dewey wasn't colored blue in most cases, still puzzles me. The music is spectacular, especially the fan-favorite moon theme. Loads of DuckTales references that any avid fan can instantly pick up on.
It's a shame that Capcom doesn't collaborate with Disney these days on new games, I think there's enough evidence from their past projects to show great potential in the future. Maybe since Disney has focused more on their venture with SquareEnix in the development of Kingdom Hearts, it might not happen, who knows.
DIFFICULT Mode from what I gathered, replaces all the cake heal-ups into simple ice cream cone heal-ups, and the same change occurs to the M Coins which grant invincibility. It's not too much different than NORMAL or EASY, although the enemies do seem a slight, tad faster with smaller hit boxes... or maybe it's just me...
I always play Transylvania and Himalayas first simply because of the Life Power-ups in them. The short rail cart segment in Transylvania (and African Mines) always annoys me, most notably the part where Scrooge has to leap off, but the window of opportunity is way too slim and is doable roughly a split second, before the rail cart hits the bottom of the pit after falling off the ledge. The Himalayas stage is probably the closest to the actual DuckTales episode that it references with the crown and abominable snow man (actually a snow WOMAN in the show).
None of these Capcom + Disney games have made it to the Virtual Console, hopefully they will soon.
