[Achieve a Ranger Emblem every post Stage]

Following suit of DuckTales, Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers' successful platformer also warranted a sequel. Strangely, like DuckTales 2, it has both its similar ups and downs in my opinion.

The graphics from both games have much improved sprites and environments than their predecessors. The color palette is richer where more intricate details make characters more livelier, for instance, Gadget looks more like her TV show appearance as opposed to her first non-cutscene sprite back in the first game. The music is debatably more memorable or the same in terms of impression as the first game borrowed little from the TV series as well.

Whereas DuckTales 2 had context continuity issues with nearly everyone calling Scrooge McDuck, "Uncle Scrooge", Chip 'n Dale Rescue Rangers 2 suffers a similar issue in that Fat Cat is housed in a 'human' sized prison and a human news reporter issues a public warning about this "dangerous" feline offender? Really? Sounds more like a joke you hear from a Jay Leno headline article clip. Monterey Jack at one point addressed Chip as "luv"; now I'll admit I haven't watched the show in a long while, but I think that was reserved for Gadget, while he called the chipmunks "mates" or "palies". Minor nitpicking I know...

Speaking of Monty, it is good to see him actually doing something more useful for the team than chasing cheese during the first game, and in his appropriate attire as well. Occasionally and sometimes in alternate doorways, he will toss two pastries for both Chip and Dale, which fully heals them both. Zipper on the other hand, hardly shows up, only at the point in which he turns on the faucet to levitate the gravy saucer in the restaurant sink.

Storywise, the game is seemingly divided into 2 different story arcs, one revolving around Fat Cat obtaining the Urn of the Pharaoh and then suddenly ricocheting to an amusement park once that plan went under.

Changes in gameplay include the ability to toss diagonally and the duck and cover trap no longer instantly defeats enemies that require 2 hits. Ranger blocks replaced the Flower blocks which were only meant to summon a free-floating 1-up when enough was gathered; this time around collecting at least 50 of them awarded a Rescue Ranger Emblem, and when enough was accumulated, the respective chipmunk's lifebar increases by 1 up to a max of 5 with 5 Rescue Ranger Emblems the essential total for complete preparedness. Getting more Rescue Ranger Emblems is purely for kicks I suppose...

I'm pretty positive the bomb scare at the restaurant was just a needless ploy to incorporate player interaction much like the Always-Right PSYCHIC, Will from Illusion of Gaia. What's the point of giving you choice if both outcomes lead to the same and are superficial to everything that succeeds it?

The boss in the sewers level (that's right, there was a need for more sewer levels...), looks similar to Bat Cat (Mietoru) from Samurai Pizza Cats, only he had a copter on his back instead of actual bat wings.

The giant refrigerator is the most unique level as it is the only one that is timed and is the only level without a boss at the end. There's no need to panic because there is more than enough time to collect the Ranger blocks and plow enemies away (sorry for the pun).

Since my I played through the first game as Chip, why not go as Dale this time around.

Rescue Rangers Away!
