Duna Polar Expedition Part 1, Episode 11 of Journey Into Space
In this episode, we commence the planning stage for an expedition to the polar regions of Duna, by air. We are taking inspiration for this journey from the "Polarfahrt", the journey of an airship from an earlier time to the polar regions of Earth. I could simply use my Gorgon interplanetary spaceplane, but I really want a specially designed aircraft, an aircraft with very strong gliding capabilities and without any design compromises to make the aircraft itself interplanetary. In other words, the airplane will have to be carried to Duna and dropped into the atmosphere, but as a result I can focus purely on the airplane's flight characteristics in the air. I don't know what flying on Duna will be like or really even whether it is possible, so the airplane will have the largest possible wingspan for the least weight. Needless to say, the expedition will be fraught with dangers and unknowns.
Having developed our Duna aircraft, we have to figure out how to get it to Duna, which caused some fruitless but interesting diversions through the realms of Jules Verne. ;)
Next time we will hopefully be inserting the airplane into Duna's atmosphere for an exploration of the polar regions of Duna by air.
