Interplanetary Spaceplane Part 1, Episode 7 of Journey Into Space
There comes a time when nothing less will do, but to violate the laws of Man, God and Kerbal and create a nuclear powered scientific abomination. A modern Frankenstein monster of a machine, set loose to scatter irradiated parts all around the bucolic landscape of an unsuspecting Kerbin. A nuclear powered, interplanetary spaceplane.
May future generations of Kerbals forgive us for what we must now do, in order that we might have the coolest toys. ;)
The plan is to take a nuclear powered spaceplane, that takes off from the landing strip at KSC, fly it to Laythe, and then fly it in the atmosphere of Laythe before eventually landing and setting a Kerbal foot on its mysterious and distant surface. Before that achievement can occur however, we must first create a monstrosity of a spaceplane, somehow hoist it into the air, and get it into orbit with nuclear engines and enough fuel to get to Laythe. And that requires testing, and that requires test pilots. Brave, foolish test pilots. ;) And I will giggle like the deranged modern Prometheus that I am, as bits of molten nuclear giblets rain on the landscape like candies from a broken pinata. Dr. Faustus, I presume? ;)
In Part 2 we will make our attempt to fly in Laythe's atmosphere, assuming there is oxygen in it for the jet engines, and assuming our interplanetary voyage is successful.
