EARTHION - Hotshot Mode Clear (1CC) - 10,116,200 Pts (No Password)
Earthion is a full-scale new Megadrive/Genesis shmup with music from Yuzo Koshiro.
Using modern techniques to push the Megadrive to its absolute limits and striving to be the most ultimate Megadrive shmup ever made. A true love letter to the 16-bit shmup era.
There has been some confusion on how the development of this has been handled, as basically all versions are being handled by different companies.
But the short story is basically:
Ancient Corporation: Original Megadrive version.
Bitwave - Porting the Megadrive version to Console/PC.
Exa Arcadia - Porting the Megadrive version to Arcade.
That said, Exa did more than just port the game. They changed a whole bunch of things to improve the game as well as it having exclusive content.
A weird situation where the initial release of a Megadrive game does not have its definitive version on the Megadrive. The Bitwave port is also a little iffy on representing the audiovisual splendor of the original. It definitely doesn't look and sound as good.
Hotshot is the highest difficulty in this version and it's honestly kinda unhinged, especially some of the later bosses. But it resembles something more of a proper arcade difficulty.
Wasn't too keen on this game at first but this mode really forces you to interact with the systems, which in turn also makes you notice that the stage design is quite good.
16-bit shmups always had these silly hard modes, so I'm glad they stayed authentic to that.
This game is both insanely hard and also very easy at the same time.
The patterns themselves are crazy, but you can make so many mistakes that it almost doesn't matter. The shields are a bit overpowered, I got hit a 100 times in this run and still cleared lmao.
The hard part is not making too many mistakes at once in a short time, because getting hit makes you lose power and then it just snowballs into a situation that you can't recover from. Losing your weapon in some situations is also an instant game over. There aren't a lot of i-frames either, so you can just get instantly owned if too many bullets hit you at once.
Presentation-wise the game is great, insane visuals and music and out of control set pieces and effects. Gameplay-wise though it feels like it has some lost potential that prevents it from being truly great.
The bullet visibility for one is like the worst thing I've ever seen in my life. Small annoyances like an unskippable 30 second intro cutscene. And some systems that could have been revised to make it less... euro? Also no practice mode of ANY kind???
Honestly the Exa version fixed everything I didn't like about this version, so I guess they tapped into that lost potential that was there. Now playing that version though...
Goofed in stage 7 and lost the missiles for the later bosses. Worked out with the other weapon though.
No-miss would really depend on the stage 7 and 8 bosses, but these just look like total nonsense to me lol.
