The term “eurojank” is sometimes viewed as derogatory, often used to belittle European developers without access to the resources and experience of their peers in the US and Japan. Games that receive this categorisation are usually highly ambitious but aren’t typically backed by a developer with many games behind them, nor a budget to truly capture the project’s vision. Many Eurojank games have healthy, committed fanbases who will argue that the things these games do well are far more important than their faults. Perhaps the game isn’t as stable or isn’t as polished as its non-European contemporaries, or the art or gameplay style doesn’t quite meet the expectations of audiences at the time. But the unique ideas on display make the game worth engaging with, and something that video game enthusiasts should experience at some point. In 2002, a German developer would release a game that looked at the success of the Pokemon franchise and decided to emulate the game’s ambitious design, despite their significantly less experienced staff.
