Spiderweb Software is the longest running independent video game developer that is still in the game today. The studio was founded in 1994 by one Jeff Vogel, and has never exceeded a handful of full-time staff at any one time. Despite Spiderweb’s longevity, Vogel claims that none of his games have been popular enough to be considered a hit. Without ever achieving mass commercial success, Spiderweb has continued to release new titles every few years so there is clearly an audience for Vogel’s games, but not one large enough to catapult the developer into notoriety. Considering the gigantic swell within the indie game industry throughout the past decade, how is it possible that Spiderweb stays afloat while their contemporaries cannot, but also manages to avoid the superstardom enjoyed by much younger studios? Could the answers to these questions be found within one of Spiderweb’s games?
