31Developers seeking to emulate the grim, dead tone of From Software’s exceedingly popular Souls series usually gravitate toward the same handful of components. An apocalypse has happened, the palette is dark and grungy, and the difficulty is ratcheted up really high to make the gameplay reflect the oppressive tone. It’s an effective strategy, but too often developers slap a miserable mood into their game and call it a day. Or someone gets a little too excited about the gloomy direction and takes things too far. There Is No Light is a bleak game. And while it does share this quality with the Souls series, is it possible that Zelart skipped over “sombre” and plunged straight down to “sadistic”?
