FALLOUT 4 How to build Alternating Neon Letters NO MODS
A short tutorial on building signs with alternating neon letters.
This technique is another way to play with the meaning of signs like we did in the flickering neon video. This technique is a lot easier then the flickering signs to build.
0:40 since the power radiators have a much smaller radius then the conduits l prefer to use them when possible. A big disadvantage is they are not able to be rug glitched. This is not a problem here as we can pillar glitch them and hide them in the ground. If you are working close to another item or on a second story floor group selecting isn't going to work. In that case you have to manually move the power radiator far enough away that you can move the conduit junction a tiny bit with out it snapping to the radiator and then after it is positioned you can snap the radiator back to it. This can be a tedious process and it may be easier to use the regular conduit or the blue wall switch (stuck on some furniture) as both of those can be rug glitched. If your sign is a lot higher then mine was you may have to use the regular conduit on the ground as the radiators may not emit power high enough to reach the neon.
1:24 I did not sink either of the alternating radiators in this vid but they can be sunk just like the other ones or you could rug glitch something over them to hide them.
1:50 you have to group select the letters off of an existing non scrappable item in the game. This can be hard to do late in your build as room often gets tight. Plan ahead and leave some space. It is also important to place the "HO" slightly in front of the other letters as that makes it easier to isolate them from the front. Placing the "WA' slightly to the rear of "S&P" would have made those letters easier to isolate from behind but I did not do it in this case. Another thing to keep in mind is neon letters have black portions of the letters that do not light up but they can block light. In this case it was important to put the "H" in front of the "W" and not the other way around. If you put the "W" in front the black portion of the "W" blocks the vertical lines of the "H". Not all letter combinations are going to work with this Alternating Letter Technique. Obviously letters such as "E" and "F" are going to cover each other regardless of which one is in front or behind.
3:03 One of your alternating radiators needs to be hooked up to an interval switch. The standard interval timing is too long (in my opinion) so it needs to be shortened to 1 second on and 1 second off. Sometimes you have to wait for the interval switch to turn green to be able to log into the terminal. You can see the pause while I wait for it in the vid.
4:35 The other alternating radiator needs to be hooked up to both the interval switch and a XOR logic gate. The basic wiring procedure is to connect constant power to the input side of the logic gate (red) and also to connect a wire from the interval switch to the input (red) of the logic gate. The output side (black) gets wired to your second alternating radiator.
I hope this is clear enough to understand. If you have any questions feel free to ask in the comments below.
[UPDATE] A youtuber named NastyBonz3D has an alternative method that doesn't need a logic gate. This is great news for players without the contraptions DLC or those who don't like hearing the logic gate clicking. He also talks a little about his dominant and passive fields which makes this much easier.
