A playthrough of Fallout Tactics, the third title of the Fallout game franchise that came out in 2001. While a "Fallout" game, Fallout Tactics is considered non-canon in the Fallout franchise established by the numbered titles, though some parts of the story told by the Brotherhood of Steel focused game have been integrated into the storyline as suggested in Fallout 3.

After blowing open a way past the gate with a direct hit from a nuclear warhead, the Warrior's squad make their way inside Vault 0. The final confrontation with the Calculator was at hand and many robots stood at the ready to defend the switches to the blast doors that had barred the way to the master system.

Information obtained previously state that Vault 0 was intended to house the greatest minds of the time, but due to corruption and budgeting decisions made by greedy self-serving board members, some critical fail-safes for Vault 0 had been cut during construction. These decisions created a fatal flaw in Vault 0 that caused its citizens in cold-sleep to awake with severely damaged brains, making them too dumb to be able to run Vault 0 and guide its programming.

The Vault 0 citizens that the Warrior's squad encountered were no more than babbling simpletons, and some seemed to have been mutilated by robots as well. After fighting their way through the first level of defenses, the Warrior's squad descend via an elevator and regroup with another squad of Brothers who would hold the position while they pushed ahead.

After reaching the final room before the main system chambers that housed the Calculator, the Warrior's squad was in for a surprise. It was no ordinary robot that stood before them, but General Barnaky, or at least his brain inside a robot body, that led a unit of robots and blocked their way. While Barnaky still retained some aspect of his personality in life, such as the desire the rid the wasteland of mutant scum, his thoughts were guided by some program installed into what was likely now a cybernetic brain that obeyed the Calculator's commands.

Though the Warrior's squad engaged in combat with the Barnaky bot, the effects the Warrior had taken from General Barnaky's corpse reminded the Barnaky brain of what he had cherished most in life: his wife and the promise he made to make the wasteland a better place. The emotions that the items evoked from Barnaky's brain cause him to rethink his current course and put an end to what was a fight to the death.

The way to the Calculator now cleared, the Warrior's squad proceeded to the Calculator's chamber only to discover it had locked itself behind impenetrable steel walls. In order to remove the protection, the Warrior proceeded to destroy all the brains floating inside the liquid jars being used to help power the command system. When the last brain was destroyed, the system could no longer function properly and the Calculator's brain became exposed.

It was then that the Calculator made a final appeal to continue its existence.

Without any other brains to support it, the Calculator was set to fail within a minute, and doing so would meant the death of a neural network of computers and technology that could never be revived again. Which was why it proposed that the Warrior offer up his own brain to become a guiding factor as the new Calculator. It meant abandoning the mortal coil of being human with a body and living on as a brain fused with machines.

Any normal human might be apprehensive of the self-sacrifice needed to preserve technology. Fortunately, General Barnaky's brain was still very much intact, and he offered to give himself to the Calculator so that he could continue to serve the Brotherhood and help keep the promise he made to his wife. However, by letting General Barnaky's brain become the Calculator, it also meant incorporating his biases against mutants into the system and also giving him the means to implement harsh policies that ended up making life miserable for many if not all mutants who have not escaped from the region.

Whatever the choice, victory was at hand for the Brotherhood. With the Calculator destroyed, it meant the robots would stop dead in their tracks, and if someone took over as the Calculator, they could simply give the command to stop the killing.

In the end, it's hard to say that there is a happy ending to Fallout Tactics. But they fought every step of the way to bring order to a region that was once plagued by destruction and lawlessness.
