Far Cry 3's shooter controls and related mechanics are great and there's a wide range of really satisfying weapons to unlock and unload on those poor pirates. Unfortunately, like a lots of action games with "RPG elements" FC3 requires you to spend quite some time upgrading your character to make him, well, *not suck*. In the beginning he is annoyingly held back by arbitrary limitations to HP, ammo, weapon carrying capacity etc. and it takes quite a bit of wildlife hunting (which other people seems to have enjoyed way more than I did) to overcome that initial awesomeness deficit. The concept of opening up new gameplay possibilities is not a bad one, but I would have preferred less restrictive systems and a focus on unlocking new weaponry.
