Given the massive catalogue of old school PC RPGs from which to choose, Baldur's Gate would not appear to be the most obvious place to start if one were determined to produce a slightly updated and modernized version. For while the process of tinkering with the original retail release (or GOG.COM digital download, for that matter) is on some level very complex, the dedicated BG modding community has by now produced several convenient yet customizable ways for ordinary end users to improve the technical as well as mechanical aspects of the original Baldur's Gate.

Nevertheless, by all accounts Overhaul Games seems to have produced a very respectable and faithful modern wrapper around Bioware's cult classic, and if this release introduces a younger generation of RPG fans to this historically important series then who am I to complain? It remains to be seen whether the new characters and content added by the developer fits nicely into the existing framework, but part of the charm with BG1 has always been that it's such an eclectic and untidy mess of game to begin with; so it's hard to see how throwing in a bunch of additional oddball characters and absurd quests could screw things up too much.
