Rapid and Precise HPLC Analysis of Polymer Monomers in Bacillus sp. CYR1-Derived Polyhydroxyalkanoates Using Alkali Decomposition Pretreatment

Layman Abstract : Traditional plastics are widely used because they're cheap, durable, and easy to produce, but they create serious environmental problems since they don't break down naturally. As a greener alternative, biodegradable plastics called PHAs (polyhydroxyalkanoates) can be made by certain bacteria. This study developed a simple way to measure these biodegradable plastics using a technique called high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) after treating them with an alkaline solution to break them down.
The focus was on a specific type of PHA known as PHBV. Researchers produced PHBV using bacteria and then measured it with the new HPLC method, comparing the results to those from the traditional gas chromatography method. By detecting and quantifying the breakdown products of PHBV, the new method proved to be both accurate and sensitive. The study shows that this straightforward approach can effectively track the production of biodegradable plastics, potentially aiding in their development and application as environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional plastics.
