0So, remember how House Goneril, where Hilda is from, is responsible for protecting Fódlan's Throat from invasion by Almyran invaders? Well, when the invasion is particularly rough, they'd call on other Alliance lords for backup. But now there are no other Alliance lords! Whoops. And the Empire can't relocate all their forces there to provide support.
That means it's up to Edelgard herself to lead the Black Eagle Strike Force in repelling the latest invasion.
Oh hey, look at that, it's Nader the "Undefeated," even though we totally defeated him last month! Dude must live for fighting.
Well, not for much longer.
The map itself isn't all that unique, and we're not in an unfamiliar position. We start on the east, at the outer walls of the fortress, and the enemy is spread throughout the forest. We just have to take out Nader, which is good, because it seems like he's got plenty of reinforcements coming.
The battle itself isn't particularly tricky, but I do like how it fits into the overall story of this route. It's clearly a consequence of Edelgard's campaign: she seized control of the Alliance territories, and now she has to deal with the problems they face. However, she shoulders the added burden without complaint, seeing it as her duty to see it not only taken care of, but taken care of personally. They leave it unstated, but I think it adds a bit more depth to Edelgard's character. Like, she's not overwhelmed by the ongoing war, or the added responsibilities that success brings. She has ambition, but it's not blind, and she's not doing it to build up her own glory. She sees what needs to be done, and she does it.
That's why, even when she's been the antagonist, I've never really thought of her as a villain.
