FE3H: Loop 4 (CF) Chapter 14 -- The Master Tactician
Before marching to the next battle, Edelgard brings up Claude's Relic, the Failnaught, and in turn, offers some information about the Heroes' Relics in general. She reveals that they're not divine gifts but rather man-made weapons, and Seiros killed Nemesis and the 10 Elites herself to take them. She kind of omits why Seiros would do that, only saying that it was a "petty" conflict, but the reason she knows anything at all is because that knowledge is passed down from emperor to emperor, and because the first emperor cooperated with Seiros to do it.
And that mostly tracks with what we've learned in other playthroughs, right? Rhea revealed that it was specifically the Agarthans that made the Relics, and that she helped form the Empire in order to fight Nemesis because he and his gang had those weapons.
Anyway, that's a big part of Edelgard's motivation: that first emperor's decision to cooperate has led to a thousand years of the people being controlled by dragons. That's why she wants to topple the Church of Seiros, and that's why she'll fight anyone who opposes her.
Moving on to the battle itself, this should be a somewhat familiar map, too! This is where we fight that Shamir and Alois paralogue. Of course, this time, instead of trying to protect the city, we're here to conquer it. We're starting on the outskirts and our goal is to push through and take out Claude at the harbor.
Incidentally, I learned just how powerful Edelgard's personal Combat Art is. I compared it to Galeforce from Awakening, which gave a unit an extra move if they killed on their first attack, but this is even better. Galeforce couldn't be chained, but Ravaging Storm can. It also technically only requires you to land the attack rather than get the kill, but at this point, that's a distinction without a difference.
Anyway, Claude has an extra trick up his sleeve: the Almyran forces and their wyvern riders. They're definitely a wrinkle as they rush you and bow knights try to sweep in from behind. He's also got Hilda stationed right in the middle of town, and she's no slouch. There's basically no way around her, either.
But by hanging in there and sticking it out, and taking out Claude, we get a choice: we can either kill him or spare him. Obviously, I have to spare him, because it was never about killing him, it was just about getting him out of the way. Whatever you do, though, won't really alter the trajectory of the story. Even if you spare him, he'll pop by to tell you he's leaving Fódlan because his presence would sow more dissent against the Empire, even though he's clearly yielded.
He also asks you to take care of his former classmates, which is a reference to Lysithea and not Hilda. If you haven't recruited Lysithea yet, she does appear on this map as a gremory, and by beating her, you're able to recruit her after this battle. Hilda isn't recruitable because she fights to her dying breath. Alas.
But with Claude out of the picture, the lines have been redrawn on the map. On our side, the Empire and Alliance. On the other side, the Kingdom and the Knights of Seiros. We're finally in a position to make a move into Kingdom territory.
