Sky & Rica: The Prelude [스카이 앤 리카] Game Sample - PC/DOS
Another game from the early days of Korean developer, Softmax (best known in the West for their "Magna Carta" games), "Sky & Rica: The Prelude" is a nice "cute-em-up" SHMUP excelling in smooth scrolling, classic vert-shooter gameplay and two-player cooperative gameplay, which was somewhat of a rarity for this type of game on PCs back in the day. Visually and mechanically, it is somewhat reminiscent of Konami's "TwinBee" franchise (from the use of colors, orientation and enemy designs to power-ups flying through the air which requires the player to "catch" them and enemies being in the air and on land) and while quite easy for a game in this genre, it's still interesting enough to see to completion with an upbeat musical score.
Players have access to a double and three-way shot, "Options" (think Gradius, TwinBee, etc.), speed modifiers (as collecting two many will make you go slower than default), bombs, energy (health), point rewards, and shields. There are seven stages and a variety of bosses and adversaries to face, though it's a little disappointing that the boss is essentially the same for the first and second level.
The game does have a plot, but it's barely illustrated in-game. If you'd like some cool general information, you can read about it at MobyGames:
