Right at the outset, I'll declare that Final Fantasy VI is my favourite game of all time. I know I say 'favourite' in a lot of videos but FF6 is not one of my favourites; it is THE favourite. When I first played the game, I was instantly hooked by the pure madness of Kefka, the mysteriousness of Terra, the quirkiness of Locke, the emotional complexity of Celes and so much more. Celes in particular, my favourite female character of all Final Fantasy games (which may seem like an unusual choice), hosts two of my favourite scenes in any video game: The Aria De Mezzo Carattere scene, and another scene which I can't mention without revealing a massive spoiler.

Searching for Friends is easily in my top 10 pieces of music in a Final Fantasy game, but I can't help but feel this is largely because of the context in which the piece is first heard. Without spoiling it, I knew FF6 was the best game I've personally ever played from the moment I heard it (not that I didn't love the game already before that). It signifies a huge turning point in the tone of the game.

About 5 years ago, I made an arrangement of Searching for Friends. It was pretty similar to the original but I recorded myself playing the electric guitar for the melody. But even back then, I remember having the idea of creating an orchestrated version of it. And so I often thought about what the intro might sound like. What you hear in the first 19 seconds of this video comes pretty close to the kind of powerful opening that I imagined.

Anyone who has played the game hopefully immediately recognises 1:35 as a slow version of Terra's Theme. Even before making the arrangement I had the idea of including part of Terra's Theme. She ultimately underpins the story of Final Fantasy VI.
