If I had to point to a series with the most haunting soundtrack, I'd be pretty torn between Zero Escape and Danganronpa. But with pieces like Despair imitation, the balance pretty much tips in favour of Danganronpa. Masafumi Takada has this incredible ability to create this kind of horror ambience without always resorting to tons of synths and effects. 1 simple sound is used so powerfully in the original. It's used in an almost identical way the beginning of Blue Bird Lamentation (from the Zero Escape series), a piece which I have been thinking about for a while.
It was that kind of ambience which encouraged me to include a part of the opening theme of the Future Arc around 2:07. Originally, I was tempted to include some percussion too but kind of felt that the effect I was hoping to achieve would be lost. Either way, I strangely enjoyed creating the sound of despair!
