I haven't played much of Fire Emblem and only encountered the series long after it acquired a fanbase outside Japan with the first localized entries for the Gameboy Advance. However, from what I've read about this tactical RPG franchise over the years it's clear that the new installment Three Houses represents an ambitious and smart move beyond the simpler "battles-and-flirting" formula of previous titles.

The introduction of a Shin Megami Tensei Persona-style hub world (in the form of a military academy which the player explores outside of combat) enables the developer to focus more on character interaction as a fully featured gameplay element in its own right. Also, the school setting is a natural fit for the game's strategic layer concerning the optimal development of your units from innocent students to veteran soldiers. The "social sim" dimension is sure to draw in new players who aren't necessarily huge fans of turn-based battles, even though the great number of available side activities and time management considerations can also be a little daunting.
