Given that it's zombie swarm technology constituted a big selling point in the game's pre-release marketing, it's somewhat surprising that the horde mechanics only really become a central part of the gameplay towards the end of Days Gone's lengthy campaign. It took many hours before I realized that completely wiping out a horde was actually one of the main side activities in the game, and individual swarms only show up on the map once the last story quest has been finished. The developer apparently intended this to be part of the end game which gives the player a reason to keep messing around in the open world after the campaign is over.
