Ready at Dawn's narrative-heavy third-person shooter The Order: 1886 got a decidedly lukewarm reception back in 2015, and despite some impressive graphics and atmospheric steampunk environments I did not finish the campaign at the time. It's now been years since I touched the game, and finally returning to it was a somewhat rough experience since I was thrown right into a really frustrating stealth section. Things thankfully improved after that, and there were some enjoyably tense cover-based shoot-outs during the remaining few chapters. The audiovisual presentation is far less impressive four years later, though, and the plot goes nowhere while gearing up for a sequel that most likely will never be produced. Given its forgettable characters and clichéd writing, perhaps that's all for the best. Still, The Order: 1886's gritty close quarters combat is not bad at all and a lot more chaotic and unpredictable - in a good way! - than what we usually get from a game so clearly inspired by the Gears of War formula.
