The final request, and what a request it is!
Being the final, lengthy request of the game, I approached it differently from the rest. For every single request up to this point, I did a full practice run followed by the recorded run immediately afterward, all in one sitting, but I practiced and recorded R18 in segments using save states across several sittings to make it easier to manage, especially since this video wound up being the longest of the series.
In addition, recording in segments was vital for the airport androids. The math equations are different each time you come to the airport, though each individual android has a fixed operation (as in, an addition android will always be an addition android). Once you enter the airport, the equations are all set, so I took advantage of this by starting a new segment at the beginning of each floor. This gave me the chance to solve and write down every solution before recording, meaning I didn’t have to do any math on-the-fly. The only exception was the very first android, just before entering the airport, so I was really careful about typing in the correct solutions. To be honest, I don’t understand how the game randomizes the puzzles, but my theory is that the game pulls from a set of equations/numbers.
Thanks to this method, the recording process went smoothly. Both emulators struggled at times, but part of this is due to the higher number of characters on-screen for most of the request. Plus, at least on an actual DS, the game actually slows down at these points anyway, especially on the first floor of the airport.
There are a ton of version differences, so I’ll just link the guide again: https://www.speedrun.com/fsr/guide/m654m
You can speak to Ken/Christina before speaking to Mati; Christina asks what you’re doing, and Ken tells you to go to Mati. Funnily enough, I learned exactly a month later that you can leave the hotel before talking to the staff; Mati won't be at the diner, but Ken will have some extra dialogue telling you to go back to the hotel. I'll show both of these conversations in a later video.
You must speak to both special agents before you can enter the bathroom. After Sumio walks out of the bathroom, you can actually walk back into the bathroom, causing the dramatic music to stop. I didn’t show it here as I felt it would have ruined the tension, but I will also show this bit in a later video. You can walk back to the entrance gate (but not the main airport lobby) as Toriko and as Sumio from the bathroom. Finally, despite Sumio’s claim that he gave back the guidebook to Edo, he still has it on PS2 if you look closely at the beginning of each Katharine section.
This game has a delightful ending, and I’m glad I found a way to experience the PS2 version through this bizarre-but-functional set up. FSR is my top three Suda 51 games, and I had a ton of fun experiencing it this way. That being said, this is not the end of the project; in case it wasn’t obvious from the number of times I’ve said “I’ll show this later,” I have several videos planned to highlight version differences and other points of interest. Stay tuned for more Dual FSR videos in the future!
