Recording R13 was a roller coaster. My practice attempt went smoothly, and there are few pitfalls in this request as it’s rather linear, but when it came to the actual recorded attempts, I had a ton of issues, some due to my own dumb mistakes (like messing up the math puzzle), some due to the game being weird.
The biggest issue was the camera as it behaved so strangely on both versions, and I saw plenty of unexpected angles in familiar areas. Leaving the hotel premises was particularly weird; the camera angles in this video wound up being the usual ones, but in my failed attempts, I sometimes saw matching camera angles or the reverse of the usual. Ending the conversation with Mati was a headscratcher, too, because the camera on PS2 tended to face me back to the hotel (but not all the time), so I had to do some awkward movement to realign it.
The camera was easily my biggest enemy in this request, but the rest went smoothly. The math puzzle syncs perfectly. The underground pod section also syncs nicely; it’s not quite a perfect sync due to the slightly different scale of the environments, so I accidentally overshot the first pod on PS2, but they’re otherwise pretty close.
Version differences:
- A blank text box is missing on DS when talking to Mati again.
- After solving the math puzzle, Remy looks towards the camera on DS, but not on PS2.
- When Sundance "pulls the trigger for tomorrow," the colors invert as Sumio falls on PS2, but not on DS.
You can run to the outside lighthouse area, but the drawbridge is up, so you can’t go to the shopping center. The Silver Case sound effect plays after the math puzzle on both versions.
After an interesting change-of-pace with the special agents, Sumio Mondo returns in the next request. Unfortunately, R14 is one of the most infamous parts of the game, and I’m dreading the recording session, but I’m hoping for the best.
