R14 is infamous for its sheer amount of walking. The recording process actually went much better than expected, though naturally with a few rough patches. This is the first request where I decided that I would splice segments together if needed, which I haven’t done since R00 to cover an emulator issue. In my practice run, I made save states at specific points to splice if needed, but everything except the last 12 minutes was recorded in one segment, meaning there are a few moments where I just sit on a blank text box for a bit too long, but hey, I’m happy I only needed one splice!
I had to splice the cinema section at the end due to some weird quirks with the couple. As it turns out, they each have their own hitbox, and it was a pain to sync up their conversations. Not only that, but Takaoko actually has an extra line on PS2, which I didn’t realize until several failed attempts of trying to get the same line on DS.
Otherwise, this chapter went fairly smoothly. Even my movement felt better than normal, which is great considering the bulk of this chapter is walking.
Version differences:
- The fixtures in Natsuko's bedroom are slightly different between versions, though the core layout is the same.
- You can run in the room with the radio and in the cinema on DS, but not on PS2.
- The room with the radio has a ceiling fan on DS, but not on PS2.
- On PS2, a radio sound effect plays after solving any radio puzzle, but not on DS.
- After solving any radio puzzle, the lobby will play Ravel's Bolero like normal on PS2, but will play Satie's Gymnopedie on DS instead.
- In the cinema on PS2, Takaoka has an extra line after the main conversation. It roughly translates to "Quiet." DS appears to be missing this line.
- The film at the end has different music between versions as PS2 uses Anata no Tameni's theme. PS2 music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FT493BHaoC8 DS music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k38Q9ez6Vsk&feature=youtu.be&t=13620
The music and sound effects from The Silver Case are played in both versions. Natsuko doesn’t have any extra dialogue if you run up back to her between puzzles. I also got the next step runlock on DS, which I amusingly delayed by doing the radio puzzle right as I got it.
R14 will likely wind up being the longest request of the series, barring maybe the final request. The playthrough is nearing the end, and I’m pretty excited to record the next few videos.
