Champions in Forge of Empires

We all know champions from the ancient greeks. They have a heavenly origin and do heroic deeds. Often they had special skills. In Forge of Empires this is represented by chivalry, a property of each champion in the game. If the champion is the only unit with chvalry he will receive a bonus on attack and defense. But beside that champions have not much in common with the champions of ancient greece.

In times of war people were stylized high to be champions. A well known example is Manfred von Richthofen, the red baron. This heroism by the war propaganda hat a very clear goal: For the population as well as for the military the fight moral and holding sake should be strengthened. In Forge of Empires this is implemented by 'call of duty'. This is a one time bonus for all other units if the champion dies.

What is the real value of such bonusses? Is a champion a useful unit?

In Forge of Empires until modern era the champion is a fast unit. From postmodern era it then is a heavy unit. As a fast unit it has the properties of these. On top the champion has bonusses which only can make him more powerful. To enable the bonus chivalry, the champion must be the only unit with chivalry in the team. As a result it does not make sense to use more than one champion at a time if this bonus is important. With this bonus the champion is between 8% and 40% stronger than a fast unit. As shown in the diagram, the bonus is very strong in low ages and not relevant in high ages. In the bronze age it is a real strong unit compared to other units of that age and in higher ages champions are not much better than every normal fast unit.

This changes completely in the postmodern era. From now on the champion is a heavy unit without the special effects of heavy units like reactive armor or stealth technology. In the post modern era the properties are moderate. In the contemporary era nobody notices the champion as the era's unique units are absolutely outstanding. Starting with Tomorrow the champion is a unit type on it's own with more range, better movement and better values for attack and defense. Without champions I would not have succeeded in winning all fights of level 4 of the guild expedition in the era tomorrow.

Champions often are the first unit that may move. The computer often sends the champion that far away from it's other units where he gets killed by the attacking units moving afterwards. He receives two or three hits and then grants a bonus on attack and defense to all remaining units. This bonus grows from age to age but much slower than all other properties. So the effect in higher ages is much less than in lower ages. Champions had their best time with the ancient greece. We already knew that at the very beginning.

Champions are available as unattached units. These normally should be best for the city defense. But the artificial intelligence moves these units so badly that their value in the defense is much lower than in the attacking team. Used by a real good player their movement abilities can make a real difference.

If you have built a champion retreat, your Alcatraz great building will also produce one or more champions every day as unattached units.

Champions as attached units are from the champion retreat. I once enabled the second slot in my champion retreat. If I would store this building in my inventory using a store building item, and later I rebuild it again, the second slot is lost. I would have to buy it again with diamonds.
This is the reason why my champion retreat was still there in colonial age and later. For gvg I always can use a couple of units from a previous age. From late middle ages until modern era the champion retreat is not important for me. Starting with tomorrow I definitly don't want to miss it.
