Want a roguelike boardgame where you can attack Dobby the Houseelf? Then check out this Cheapness affordable gaming review of For the King [Episode 79]

For the King is a digital boardgame by IronOak Games and published by Curve Games. This cheap gaming review shows how:
-The game has brilliant polygonal visuals and funny ragdoll physics (The characters perfectly contained in gameplay rooms essentially during the turn-based combat alongside the perfect amount of set dressing). It's kind of pallid colour wise and the theming is a bit over the place if that bothers you (A wizard crab will fight alongside)
-Good renaissance fair music with flute etc. that is serious in feel (Compared to the rest of the game) plus it has some nice sound ques like the drums when you add focus
-Decent turn-based combat that does offer tactical consideration through turn order, status effects, invulnerabilities of the different enemies (Stereotypically jrpg)
-Lovely board game like feel with a heavy dose of luck-based gain and loss that provides most of the thrill (During encounters and combat)
-But your stats are relevant too and increase the odds of favorable outcomes and the gear you equip buff them and that is the main way in which you influence your odds of success (You buy gear, get rewarded with it by completing quests and defeating enemies and getting a good outcome during encounters - the most like gambling and perhaps the most fun)
-You can ensure outcomes by spending focus but it's not free to replenish and it can be worthwhile to save it up (It quite handily tells you how much the percentage chance of success would improve through each focus point use)
-This may sound a bit dry but I love the game and feel that the mentioned board gameyness counteracts this
-There is a system to push you along, chaos and scourges, that necessitates efficient movement across the hexagonal map (Scourges are bosses that will impact you negatively from afar once they awaken until they are defeated and chaos causes a couple of negatives as it rises but a few different takes can decrease its level) but some may feel rushed by this. It does have the function of preventing you from grinding too much in lower risk/ lower level areas until you leisurely want to proceed and I like that
-And there are additional campaigns where these mechanics are not present (Plus free content)
-The story is generic and almost non-existent (Just enough to get the adventure up and running)
-The roguelike elements are slow (I still haven't bought all of the items from the lore store that can then appear in future runs) plus the runs are long. Not the quickest nor most cheerful roguelike restarts you will find (Very deflating). Most will give up early especially since you will see most of what there is to see before you actually complete a run. I had to play around with the other campaigns to inject more excitement and I still haven't completed the game)
