First hour of gameplay with the huge open world space simulator follow up to Starlancer, Freelancer the game which takes the franchise in a very different direction to the mission lead original. Freelancer turns to the classic space game Elite for much of its design, but adds in a large story and a huge cast of characters to give the galaxy a whole range of life.

You play Edison Trent a mercenary out to make his name in the galaxy. Who finds himself on the space station Freeport 7 at the wrong time and the wrong place. Setting up the events that will bring him into a conspiracy that will rock the entire system.

A huge game with plenty of depth, even if the missions can get somewhat repetitive, while the story does force the player to play a certain way, once it ends. You can choose to explore the galaxy how you like, which factions to ally with and who to work for. Chase down pirates and trade resources or steal cargo and smuggle goods, you play how you want. You can search out hidden ship wrecks along with flying and upgrade one of the many different ship designs.

For everything you need to do to get it to run, patching to 1.1 can cause the game not to run on Windows 7 and requires the Windows 8 / 10 fixes to be used. Which are also need to get around the retail DRM which no longer works on newer versions of Windows, even if you have the original retail version installed. The game didn't originally support widescreen, arriving at a time when widescreen was just becoming standard for the industry. This is one game that hugely benefits from it and the link above details two methods for widescreen, we used the Jason's Freelancer Patch listed on pcgamingwiki. Which does include some minor game balances.

A great title that sadly released in a time before Steam when PC game sales were on the slide and didn't make much of an impact in the market. So ended up largely forgotten and sadly not ported to any other system. A sequel was said to be in the works called Freelancer 2: Project Lonestar, for the Xbox 360, but there is little gameplay footage and Digital Anvil were closed in 2006.
