Power Drive is a 1994 top-down racing game developed by Rage Software for the Sega Mega Drive and Sega Game Gear, among other consoles.

The Game Gear version of the game was only distributed in Europe. The Mega Drive version was only available in cartridge form in Europe, Australia, and Brazil, however it was available to North American consumers through the Sega Channel service.

In 1994, Rage Software was primarily known for sports games, specifically soccer games. For that reason, it may have come as a surprise to see them venture into the world of top-down racing with Power Drive. The Sega version of Power Drive was easy enough to miss, having never seen a physical release in North America (rather than being limited to the Sega channel only), but Power Drive did get a cartridge release in most of PAL regions.

gameplay
The premise of the game is pretty straightforward, the player starts with $27,000 in bankroll and has the option of spending that money on a Fiat Cinquecento or a Rover Mini, before taking part in a rally championship. The championship consists of three types of events; Time Trial, Rally Cross and Skill Test, all spread over 48 events in eight countries. Each of the three event types has a distinct style, the goal of Time-Trial events is to complete a point-to-point race in the shortest amount of time possible. Rally Cross events are four-lap, head-to-head races against a CPU opponent, and Trials of Skill are timed races on a small conical course.

Gameplay-wise, Power Drive does a great job of capturing the feeling of driving rally stages around the world. The controls feel slightly delayed, sort of like a real car as you feed steering and throttle inputs. A nice touch is that the camera will move to keep as much distance in front of the car visible as possible, and you will need this extra visibility for some of the later stages. As is fairly standard in rally games, navigation instructions appear on the screen to show the player the type of corner to be negotiated next, in the form of arrows that appear just in time for the player to react and drive. the corner neatly. Gamers will be delighted that navigation instructions are such a well-used feature in Power Drive.

One thing that makes the game tricky at times is that the courses can be too narrow. This isn't much of a problem when entering a solo stage like time trials, but Rally Cross stages can be very frustrating. There is little room to overtake, and the player is often heavily penalized if contact is made with the CPU car. Overtaking maneuvers must be planned very carefully to avoid damaging the car and wasting time; However, one element of head-to-head racing that Rage Software definitely got right was real-time CPU opponent progress. A common problem with top-down racers of the time was that it was never possible to get very far, as the CPU car would always be off-screen.

That's not a problem with Power Drive, but it's rare that the player can gain much of an advantage as the CPU car seems to get a little speed boost to keep the player working hard.
At the end of each of the eight rounds, the player receives a password with which to continue the championship at a later time. It would have been nice to see a save system in a game like this, so stage times could be saved as well, but the password system is well designed and works well enough.

Sadly, Power Drive does not have a two-player head-to-head racing mode, but the multiplayer option is included. Up to eight players can take turns driving each stage of the rally, passing the controller between them. A head-to-head option would have been a very welcome feature, but the available multiplayer still provides plenty of fun by having players try to beat each other's stage times.
