GeckoLinux is a Linux spin based on the openSUSE distribution, with a focus on polish and out-of-the-box usability on the desktop. The project's latest rolling release snapshot carries the version number 999.210517.0 and features a number of new features. Btrfs is now used as the default filesystem, zRAM is enabled, and the EarlyOOM service is enabled to terminate applications which are using too much memory. "This release offers several quality of life improvements for GeckoLinux ROLLING users. By majority vote, the default filesystem for the various Calamares guided installation options is now Btrfs with transparent Zstd data compression. Of course, all other modern Linux filesystems are also still supported via the custom partitioning option. GeckoLinux 999.210517.0 introduces a number of new features, the biggest highlight of which is the fact that Btrfs is now used as the default file system.
Yes. This version offers several improvements in quality of life for GeckoLinux ROLLING users. By majority vote, the default file system for the various guided installation options for Calamares is now Btrfs with transparent Zstd data compression.
Of course, all other modern Linux file systems are also supported through the custom partitioning option.
Although Btrfs is now the default file system for new installations, your existing GeckoLinux ROLLING installation will not be affected the next time you update your system.
However, if you want to install GeckoLinux with another file system, you can select one of several supported file systems using the custom partitioning option.
In addition, zRAM swap is enabled immediately, and the EarlyOOM daemon is also enabled to help prevent unrecoverable system freezes in low memory situations (it will terminate applications that are using a lot of memory).
To top it off, on GeckoLinux 999.210517 the xf86-video-amdgpu graphics driver is now used by default for the latest AMD Ryzen hardware.
Finally, fans of the GNOME 40 desktop environment will be pleased to hear that GeckoLinux 999.210517 ROLLING is now shipping with GNOME 40.1.
The other editions have also been updated to the latest desktop environments, including LXQt 0.17, Budgie Desktop 10.5.3, KDE Plasma 5.21.5, Xfce 4.16, Cinnamon 4.8.6 and MATE 1.24.
