Twelfth day of Autumn, Year One:
We resolved to take advantage of the last of the good weather before Winter entombed us, by considering plans and conducting surveys of the land surrounding the fort in hopes of expanding the land available to our farmers.

With a plan in mind, we selected the best area for our expansion, and set to the task of preparing it. This naturally required a large amount of wood-chopping, a task to which Shelab took with great enthusiasm. Unfortunately, while she was working away from the fort, the green-skins (using the forest as cover) ambushed her, and before the militia could rally to her defence she lost her right arm! Naturally, the craven swine were rounded up and slaughtered, and I can only hope Shelab's loss was tempered by their painful cries as they were kicked, punched, and bitten to death.

Fortunately for the fort, Shelab seems to be ambidextrous and can still hold an axe in her left hand... though she did mention that she would have appreciated it if her fellow Gnomes hadn't left her arm outside for the bears to eat. Clearly we must have a talk about hauling priorities in the future!

However, the ambush, and the later attack which left ElsonDwarf injured (though not seriously) made it clear that our current defences were inadequate, and so work has begun on the construction of an actual barracks that may eventually house a dedicated military. Where we'll find the Gnomes to fill out such positions though, that's another problem entirely...
