GoPro Hero 8 Black Vlogging Setup - My Final Choice And Why
In this video I'm explaining my decision with what I've settled on as my my final GoPro Hero Hero 8 Black vlogging setup.
To all intent and purpose I'm now calling this one the best GoPro Hero 8 Black vlogging setup.
This setup is the one with my Hero 8 in the GoPro Media Mod. This particular Media Mod is the one where I've modified the so called built in shotgun vlogging mic and turned it into a much better sounding omni-directional mic.
While an omni-directional microphone isn't necessarily as suited to vlogging as a directional cardioid one is. This particular microphone capsule that I've used inside the Media Mod modification does a very good job and sounds very noticeably better than either the Hero 8 built in mics or those on the Media Mod.
In the video I also explain why using a ND filter with the Hero 8 Black isn't necessarily a good idea. This is because of the way the Hero 8 and its HyperSmooth 2.0 EIS stabilisation work and the way that it works better with a brighter more exposed picture using a higher shutter speed to help with the HyperSmooth stabilization. Basically, the GoPro Hero 8 and HyperSmooth work better when the GoPro exposes itself and mostly automatically. So using an ND to lower shutter in order to achieve a 180 degree exposure, no matter how its done, isn't the best thing for HyperSmooth. With HyperSmooth off, these issues are a lot less and you are only really subject to the usual exposure and motion issues of shooting with a low shutter on a typical digital camera, especially when exposing in low light conditions and the whole mess that can cause. I will do a video at some point showing this issue with using an ND with the Hero 8 and HyperSmooth.
As for my Ulanzi G8-5 setup with the GoPro Pro 3.5mm Mic Adapter. While this is the better setup for many reasons and is excellent for use with external microphones for a Hero 8 vlogging setup. Plus it allows for many 52mm filters such as polarizers, UV filters etc. It has now become surplus to requirement because of the exposure issues when using the Hero 8 with an ND. This is a real blow for me as I truly believe that the Ulanzi G8-5 vlogging case for the GoPro Hero 8 Black is one of the best dedicated peripherals I've ever bought for any camera.
With all that said, there's no argument from me with how mega convenient my final GoPro vlogging setup is for vlogging and mostly selfie vlogging.
Maybe we get to see a GoPro Hero 9 Black later this year and that has a proper built in cardioid mic for vlogging without the need for an external vlogging mic or even no need for a Media Mod or mic adapter, maybe the GoPro Hero 9 or whatever is next by GoPro will have a built in 3.5mm mic jack interface adapter. This could make the GoPro Hero 9 Black the best clogging camera ever. And maybe pigs will fly :)
Cheers,
Dave.
