Today I'll be playing Gunjack. Developed and released by CCP, Gunjack docks itself across multiple VR platforms. The object of the game is to clear the enemy waves by shooting down as many foes as possible. There's 20 waves total the last about 5 minutes each. Plus a couple of bonus stages. You're ranked based on score which involves keeping up chains and not dying. You have three continues before you're forced to restart the level, so completing the game isn't that difficult, in fact getting three stars is pretty easy too. I nailed it on my first try on about half the levels. There's several power ups and weapons you can collect like homing missiles and lasers, sonic booms, and the stasis web. The control are very basic, you use the trigger or x to shoot and square to reload. The main strategy in Gunjack is to the learn the waves and know the best time to reload, because that's when you're vulnerable. You aim the gun with your face, and the level is completely stationary, so you shouldn't get dizzy. There's some parts where you need to press other buttons to repair your ship or whatever, but they feel thrown in and gimmicky. The levels look and feel very similar and there's about twenty different enemies, which are also pretty similar, so I couldn't tell you which level I liked the most. The difficulty curve is sketchy. Some of the later levels are way easier than the middle of the game, but it's pretty easy in general. The commentary tries it best to be funny. Once you complete the game you can go back and check your scores against the leaderboards, and they even have a superscore, but they only rank the top 50 at least on the PS4 version. Overall, Gunjack is a bare bones shoot em up, leaving you feel stranded in space. It's a still a good foundation for a VR game and I'm looking forward to what the developers have in store next, but don't expect too much if you wanna pick up gun jack. I think the game needs background animations or something. Multiple weapons wouldn't hurt either. Got any suggestions? Start a dialogue in the comments.
