Made in 1983 by UPL, and never released outside of Japan until now, Nova 2001 finds it's way onto PS4's Arcade Archives. The object the game is to shoot down the enemy swarms without getting hit. The ships leave behind numbered blocks when they're destroyed that can be picked up for more points. The blocks also prevent your bullets from passing through so you really need to pick them up if you want a clear shot. You can also shoot down the enemy bullets if you're cornered. Every once in a while a giant spaceship comes from the top of the screen that you need to take out. There's several different enemies with their own point value, and with each wave comes a new pattern. You can move in 8 directions with the stick and use a button to fire. There's a second button that you use to hold the direction you're facing, so you can focus your bullets. The controls are interesting. It's nice once you get the hang of it. I reassigned the hold button to L1 and fire to x, but the default controls are just fine. The emulation also allows for turbofire, which makes the game a bit too easy. Turning and getting your aim right, especially on diagonals, can be a bit clunky but it works in general. Every stage up to level 32 has a new background, which doesn't affect the play area at all-- it's only aesthetic. Some levels it can be hard to distinguish from the foreground, and it's really disappointing that there aren't any obstacles or power ups. Okay there are power ups, but they're not common and no one knows what they hell they do. And the background music is strange. Overall, Nova2001 a decent shooter for anyone diving into obscure titles. It's games like this that make me glad Hamster is preserving rare classics by bringing them to the PS4, because almost nobody would have played it otherwise. Now all they need to do is bring down the price a little bit and the Arcade Archives would get a lot more downloads.
