Ninja Senki DX is free this month on PSN but only for a few more days let's check it out. Your mission is to make your way across 16 stages taking out enemies with your ninja star and jumping across platforms. Take 5 hits, fall down a hole, or touch a spike, and it's back to beginning of the level or checkpoint. Each level lasts about two minutes once you familiarize yourself with all the dense action. And you'll encounter dozens of enemies including 8 boss battles. There's different challenges you can try accomplish throughout your runs, like collecting all the coins, kill all the enemies, or beat the par time, which add a nice layer of replayability. The controls are basic, you move, you jump, you shoot. You can also perform a small air jump that gets you a little bit higher, and helps carry more horizontal motion as well. There controls were built into the level design extremely well, and your ninja feels quick and responsive. Don't expect wall jumping or any new mechanics to be introduced, it's more about mastering minimal platforming. Once you beat the game you can take part in boss rush or hardcore mode, which doesn't allow saving and penalizes continues. Score can also be used to refill your health or add an extra life, which occurs every 1000 points. There's also original and remixed soundtracks. As far as I'm aware of, the PS4 version does not contain leaderboards, but the steam version does. The difficulty curve is a little bumpy, I found level 12 to be the toughest. Overall, Ninja Senki DX is a nice stripped back platformer good for some lighthearted action. The challenges provide nice replayability, and it's much better when you can compare your scores and times globally. I'd say pick it up on PS4 while it's still free it's definitely worth a look.
