Haunted Castle was released in North America as a conversion kit for arcades: essentially a PCB board and some stickers that could be used to swap out the contents of a pre-existing standing cabinet with a joystick. Oddly, there were numerous versions of the game and some were so difficult that the game was virtually unplayable. Worst of all were the North American versions, which is how Haunted Castle garnered the reputation as being the worst Castlevania game of all time.
