Haunted Castle, the Castlevania arcade game, had a troubled development history
Everything we know about the development of the Castlevania arcade game from 1988 (Akomajou Dracula - in Japan - or Haunted Castle over here) comes from various interviews with Masaaki Kukino, a former Konami graphic artist who would later become one of the main guys behind SNKs more recent fighting games. According to Kukino, Haunted Castle got way behind schedule, and so he and a bunch of guys who were working on another game (Hot Chase) had to be moved to the Castlevania project for two months in order to finally get the game out the door. Allegedly, the game was intended to be quite different and only late in development were the aesthetics changed to Castlevania…..but I find that to be an unlikely take on the true story, whatever it may be.
