Hideous Destructor | Jumpwad Map01 & Jumpmaze Map05 | No Failure Runs
I'm not sure if I've said this before, I think I might have, pardons if I'm repeating myself, but HDest is one of those rare Doom mods that got me feeling like I'm playing classic Prince of Persia/Tomb Raider. Sure, there have been mods that had mantling and stuff, but they always felt automated to me (similar to a lot of modern cinematic platformers I suppose, which is why I'm also not fond of them), you can just hop to a ledge and you'll climb up it instantly, no sweat or fuss at all, practically magnetic platforming. With HDest, you get this idea that any jump you make is a deliberate decision, a controlled movement with a specific keycombo, requiring more precision than just reflexes.
I say this, because the act of jumping in this mod isn't just simply holding a direction key while also hitting the jump key. It is that, and more. HDest has leaping jump, standing jump, lunge jump, sprint lunge jump, roll jump, wall jumping, ledge ladder catching, the list goes on! And every single one of them has a very specific keycombo to use for them. For instance, lunge jump has me hitting the altfire on the fists in nearly the same moment as me hitting jump, and that helps me clear vertical gaps with a higher ledge that a regular leaping jump (hold forward and then jump) can't quite make.
Now, the Tomb Raider maps that I've been trying to play so far didn't quite satisfy my classic-esque platforming needs with HDest. Stuff like The Wreck almost tried, but it was still pretty Doom focused, shooting the badguys and getting keys. I needed something that focuses on just the idea of "golly, lotta jumpin' here, innit?", and in comes Jumpmaze and Jumpwad. A little bit of pepper to add thematic elements and it's like I'm back in ol' Persia again. Yes, I did try to find more oriental middle eastern palace maps. Unfortunately, Istanbul was the only one I could find and I've played that aeons ago.
I can't say that all of the maps are doable, unfortunately. Not for lack of trying, of course. Jumpwad is very obviously not made with mod mixing in mind and breaks with some maps that demand you to find gems that are vanilla item replacement. Jumpmaze itself also requires some very serious hops, not that I can't actually clear them with HDest, especially with zerkpacks and jetpacks, but at that point I think the idea of the run itself is spoiled. Still though, the ones that are possible are a lot of fun to do, and I look forward to NFR-ing more of these instead of the usual tactical shooty affair.
