How to Connect & Pair new Roku Remote to TV (Easy Method)
To connect and pair a new Roku remote to your TV, the process depends on whether your remote is an infrared (IR) "simple" remote or a "voice" remote (using RF, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth). Here’s how to do it as of April 7, 2025:
Step 1: Identify Your Remote Type
Simple Remote (IR): No pairing button, no microphone or voice features. Works with line-of-sight to the Roku device.
Voice Remote: Has a pairing button (usually in the battery compartment or on the back) or voice features (microphone icon). Requires pairing.
For a Simple Remote (IR)
Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment and insert the required batteries (usually AA or AAA, included with a new remote).
Turn On Your TV and Roku: Ensure your Roku device is powered on and the TV is set to the correct HDMI input.
Point and Test: Aim the remote at the Roku device (it must have a clear line of sight) and press any button (like Home or OK). It should work immediately without pairing.
Troubleshooting: If it doesn’t work, replace the batteries with fresh ones and ensure nothing blocks the path between the remote and the Roku device.
For a Voice Remote (Requires Pairing)
Insert Batteries: Open the battery compartment and insert the batteries. For rechargeable remotes (like the Voice Remote Pro), ensure it’s charged via USB first.
Turn On Your TV and Roku: Power on your Roku device and select the correct HDMI input on your TV.
Locate the Pairing Button:
Most voice remotes have a pairing button inside the battery compartment or on the back.
If there’s no pairing button (some newer models), use the alternative method below.
Pair the Remote:
With Pairing Button: Press and hold the pairing button for 5 seconds until the status light (usually green) flashes. The remote will attempt to connect to the Roku device.
Without Pairing Button: Press and hold the Home and Back buttons together for 5 seconds until the light flashes.
Wait for Confirmation: The TV should display a “Pairing remote…” message. After about 30 seconds, you’ll see a confirmation that the remote is paired.
Troubleshooting: If it fails, move the remote closer to the Roku device, ensure fresh batteries, and repeat the process. You can also unplug the Roku, wait 10 seconds, plug it back in, and try pairing again.
If You Need to Navigate to Settings (Adding a New Remote)
If your old remote works or you’re using the Roku mobile app (downloadable for iOS/Android, connected to the same Wi-Fi as your Roku), you can pair a new voice remote via the menu:
Go to Home on your Roku screen.
Select Settings.
Choose Remotes & Devices.
Select Add Devices or Set up a new device, then pick Remote.
Follow the on-screen instructions and press the pairing button (or Home + Back) as prompted.
