Step 1: Determine Your Remote Type

First, figure out what kind of Roku remote you have. There are two main types. An IR simple remote doesn’t pair and works by pointing at the TV with no pairing mode needed. It has no voice button or pairing button. A voice remote uses Wi-Fi to connect, often has a microphone or magnifying glass icon for voice commands, and may or may not have a pairing button. Check the battery compartment or the back for a small button to confirm.

Step 2: Prepare the Remote

For an IR simple remote, you don’t need pairing mode. Just insert fresh batteries, point it at the TV, and press buttons like Power or Home. If it works, you’re done. For a voice remote, proceed with the steps below to put it into pairing mode and connect it.

Step 3: Put Voice Remote into Pairing Mode
Insert fresh batteries into the remote. Open the battery compartment, put in new batteries, and close it.

Power on your Roku TV. Use the TV’s physical buttons or another working remote if needed to turn it on and get to the home screen.

Locate the pairing button if your remote has one. It’s usually inside the battery compartment or on the back. Press and hold it for 5 seconds until a light flashes, often green, near the button or at the bottom of the remote.
