How to Fix Stick Drift on PS5 Controller & Open it up (Easy Guide)
Stick drift on a PS5 DualSense controller—when the analog sticks register movement without input—can be frustrating. Below is a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and fix it, including how to safely open the controller if needed. I’ll keep it clear and practical, covering both simple fixes and deeper repairs.
Tools Needed
Basic Fixes: Microfiber cloth, compressed air, 90%+ isopropyl alcohol, cotton swabs, paperclip or pin.
Opening Controller: Small Phillips (PH00) screwdriver, plastic prying tool (like a spudger), tweezers (optional).
Repairs: Replacement joystick modules (if replacing sticks), soldering iron and desoldering tape (for advanced repairs).
Clean Joystick Modules:
The analog sticks are attached to the motherboard. Inspect for dust or debris around the base of each stick.
Use compressed air to blow out loose particles.
Lightly dampen a cotton swab with isopropyl alcohol and clean the plastic housing around the sticks (avoid soaking internal components).
Rotate the sticks while cleaning to expose all areas. Let dry for 10 minutes.
Check Potentiometers:
Each joystick has two potentiometers (small sensors at the base) controlling X and Y axes. Drift often comes from worn or dirty potentiometers.
If comfortable, use a dry cotton swab or contact cleaner (sparingly) to clean the potentiometer surfaces. Avoid bending or damaging them.
Reassemble to Test:
Reconnect the battery by firmly pressing its connector back into place.
Snap the shell back together, starting at the top near the shoulder buttons, and press until clips engage. Replace the four screws.
Test the controller in a game before fully tightening to ensure drift is reduced.
