How to Fix Xbox Controller That Won't Sync & Blinking Lights (Best Method)
If your Xbox controller won’t sync to your Xbox and the Xbox button is blinking, it means the controller is trying to connect but failing. This can happen on Xbox One, Series X, or Series S controllers. Here’s how to fix it as of March 24, 2025:
Check the Batteries: Remove the battery pack or AA batteries from the controller. Replace them with fresh batteries or recharge the battery pack if it’s a rechargeable one. Low power can prevent syncing, even if the light blinks.
Power Cycle the Controller: Press and hold the Xbox button on the controller for 10 seconds until it turns off (the light should stop blinking). Wait a few seconds, then press it again to turn it back on. The blinking should resume as it searches for the console.
Restart the Xbox: Turn off your Xbox completely by holding the power button on the console for 10 seconds until it shuts down. Unplug it from the wall for 30 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. This resets the console’s wireless connection.
Sync Manually: Locate the sync button on your Xbox—it’s a small circular button near the USB port on Xbox One or on the front of Series X|S next to the USB port. Press it (the Xbox light will flash). Then press the sync button on your controller—a small button on the top near the charging port—within 20 seconds. The controller’s Xbox button should stop blinking and stay solid if it connects.
Move Closer and Clear Interference: Bring the controller within 6-10 feet of the console. Remove obstacles like walls or other electronics (e.g., Wi-Fi routers, microwaves) that might interfere with the 2.4 GHz wireless signal Xbox controllers use.
Update the Controller: If it syncs briefly or you’ve connected it before, plug it into the Xbox with a USB cable (preferably the one it came with). Go to Settings, Devices & Connections, Accessories, select the controller, and choose Update if an option appears. Follow the prompts to install any firmware updates.
Test with a USB Cable: Plug the controller directly into the Xbox with a USB cable. If it works wired but not wirelessly, the issue might be the controller’s wireless module.
Reset and Re-Pair: If it still won’t sync, hard reset the controller by holding the sync button (top of controller) for 10 seconds while it’s off, then repeat the manual sync process from step 4.
