How to Fix PS5 Unrecognized Disc Won't Start! Game Disc Won't Start (Easy Method)
Here’s how to fix a PS5 "Unrecognized Disc" error or a disc that won’t start, without brackets:
Check the Disc
Inspect it for scratches, dirt, or smudges on the surface.
Clean it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth like microfiber, wiping from the center outward, not in circles.
Test a different PS5 or PS4 game disc to see if the issue is just with one disc.
Insert the Disc Correctly
Place the disc with the label facing up if the PS5 is vertical, or to the left if horizontal.
Listen for the disc drive to spin; if it’s quiet, the console might not detect it.
Restart the PS5
Eject the disc by pressing the eject button or going to Settings, System, Disc, Eject Disc.
Power off the PS5 fully, not Rest Mode, unplug it for 1-2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
Reinsert the disc and try again.
Update System Software
Go to Settings, System, System Software, System Software Update and Settings.
Select Update System Software to install the latest firmware, which can fix disc issues.
Verify Disc Compatibility
Ensure it’s a PS5 or PS4 game disc, since PS3, PS2, or PS1 discs aren’t supported natively.
Check region compatibility; PS5 games are region-free, but some PS4 discs may link to your account’s region.
Rebuild Database
Turn off the PS5.
Hold the power button until you hear two beeps, about 7 seconds, to enter Safe Mode.
Connect your controller via USB, select Rebuild Database, Option 5, and let it finish to fix recognition problems without losing data.
Test the Digital Version
If you own the game digitally through PS Store or PS Plus, launch it from your library to see if the issue is disc-specific.
Check the Disc Drive
Listen for strange noises like grinding or clicking when inserting the disc, which could signal hardware trouble.
Use compressed air to gently remove dust from the disc slot, but avoid inserting objects.
Reset the PS5, Last Resort
Back up your data at Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, Save Data, Back Up to USB or cloud.
Go to Settings, System, System Software, Reset Options, Reset Your Console; this wipes everything, so use it only if needed.
Suspect Hardware Failure
If multiple discs fail and steps don’t help, the disc drive might be faulty. Contact PlayStation Support at support.playstation.com, log in, and request a repair with your PS5’s serial number from the bottom of the console.
