This video covers installing and running Rise of Nations Extended Edition on Linux using Steam Proton, as well as fixes for the music and multiplayer not playing or functioning respectively.

Please note this was confirmed to work on Proton 5.0-10.

Step 1. Install Winetricks

Open up a Terminal window and type the following.

For example, for Arch based distributions.

sudo pacman -S winetricks

Alternatively for Ubuntu based distributions.

sudo apt install winetricks

Step 2. Install Protontricks

I recommend the pipx method.

Step 3. Install directmusic and directplay

Using Proton tricks, install both directmusic and directplay.

Make sure you have launched the game at least once before continuing.

Next, open a Terminal command and execute the below in order.

protontricks 287450 sound=alsa
protontricks 287450 directmusic
protontricks 287450 directplay

Remaining Bugs

The Learn To Play Campaign does not work at all.
